The 4th International Congress on Orchid Conservation follows on from the successful congresses held in Perth (Western Australia) in 2001, Sarasota
(Florida) in 2004 and San José (Costa Rica) in 2007. We are now experiencing dramatic changes in most aspects of our life.
Modern technologies are being devised and deployed with increasing frequency; although they make our lives easier, their consequences,
such as pollution of air, soil and water, greatly increase the pressure on our already stressed environment.
To keep up with the rapidly growing human population, agricultural practices tend to be more and more intensive,
which has a negative effect on biodiversity in agricultural landscape. Due to human activities, global temperature is increasing,
with unpredictable consequences on ecosystems. Therefore, we have decided to dedicate this congress to „Orchids in a Changing World“.
We hope that this theme will offer much scope for discussion.
We encourage contributions on the main topic (orchids in a changing world), but results from any other field are also welcome – we have 11 sessions, as shown in the Scientific program, in which each orchid enthusiast will find a niche, we believe. We are sure that each of the sessions will strongly contribute to the common message of the congress, as it is time for a synthesis approach, where various lines of investigation are examined with the goal of defining gaps and future initiatives.
The congress venue is in a beautiful setting of the Hluboká castle park, just a few steps from the castle itself. The hotel is built in the style reminding the castle interior, so you will feel like being an aristocrat several centuries ago, especially if you will choose one of the few suites available.
Field trips to orchid-rich sites in the Czech Republic will also be offered. We will show you examples of typical orchid habitats and you will speak with managers, who are in charge of long-term, large-scale orchid management programs. You will learn a lot about the problems and perspectives in orchid conservation in central Europe.
